چکیده

This paper introduces a new method of generating 2D flat patterns from a 3D triangulated surface by opening the bending configuration of each winged triangle pair. The flattening can be divided into four steps. First, a 3D triangulated surface is modeled with a mass–spring system that simulates the surface deformation during the flattening. Second, an unwrapping force field is built to drive the mass–spring system to a developable configuration through the numerical integration. Third, a velocity redistribution procedure is initiated to average velocity variances among the particles. Finally, the mass–spring system is forced to collide with a plane, and the final 2D pattern is generated after all the winged triangle pairs are spread onto the colliding plane. To retain the size and area of the original 3D surface, a strain control mechanism is introduced to keep the springs from over-elongation or over-shrinkage at each time step. c © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Non-distorting Flattening for Virtual Colonoscopy

In this paper, we consider a novel 3D visualization technique based on surface flattening for virtual colonoscopy. Such visualization methods could be important in virtual colonoscopy since they have the potential for non-invasively determining the presence of polyps and other pathologies. Further, we demonstrate a method which presents a surface scan of the entire colon as a cine, and affords ...

Surface Parameterization for Meshing by Triangulation Flattening

We propose a new method to compute planar triangulations of triangulated surfaces for surface parameterization. Our method computes a projection that minimizes the distortion of the surface metric structures (lengths, angles, etc.). It can handle any manifold surface for which a connected, valid, two-dimensional parameterization exists, including surfaces with large curvature gradients and non-...

Texture Mapping Using Surface Flattening via Multidimensional Scaling

We present a novel technique for texture mapping on arbitrary surfaces with minimal distortions, by preserving the local and global structure of the texture. The recent introduction of the fast marching method on triangulated surfaces [9], made it possible to compute geodesic distances in O(~ n lg ~ n) where ~ n is the number of triangles that represent the surface. We use this method to design...

Quasi-conformal Flat Representation of Triangulated Surfaces for Computerized Tomography

In this paper we present a simple method for flattening of triangulated surfaces for mapping and imaging. The method is based on classical results of F. Gehring and Y. Väisälä regarding the existence of quasi-conformal and quasi-isometric mappings between Riemannian manifolds. A random starting triangle version of the algorithm is presented. A curvature based version is also applicable. In addi...
